The choices can be overwhelming, some things to consider when planning your project are the type of tiles.
The choices can be overwhelming, some things to consider when planning your project are the type of tiles.
Ceramic tiles:
Ceramic tiles come in a range of quality and price. Some tiles can make a project look cheap, but more high end ceramics can create a stunning finish.
Porcelain tiles:
Porcelian tiles are ceramic but are fired in the kiln for much longer (up to 4 times), giving the tile a harder feel and finish. Price can reflect quality.
Natural stone tiles:
This include marble (tumbled and polished), travertine, slate and terracotta.
These tiles can require more care than porcelain and ceramic tiles and can be more expensive.
Depending upon traffic (usage) these tiles may need sealing twice a year.
Mosiacs:
Mosaic tiles do not come square on the sheets and therefore are a popular choice for swimming pools where the water creates an optical illusion so that the tiles look straight.
Mosaic tiles are also used as borders in bathrooms and on feature walls.
After care :
After installing we make it a point to tell our customers how to care for their tiles.
Here are a few reminders;
1 Clean only with a small amount of washing up liquid in warm water.
2 Keep tiles and grout moisture free by wiping down after a shower or any spillages.
3 Do not use a bleach on coloured grout e.g sandstone, beige or grey. The bleach will turn the grout black.
4 If you notice stains or dirt on the tiles, clean them as soon as possible.
5 There are lots of mould removal brands, HG is what we recommend.
If you can stick to these simple rules then the tiles and grout will stay good for years.
Services
Our services range from changing just one tile to installing a fully tiled room and floor. We tile interiors and exteriors, includig pathways, swimming pools, steps and entrance halls.
We are trained to properly finish jobs including polishing, dusting tiles, sealing if natural stone is used and with silicone where needed for a watertight finish.
We ensure that the weak points in a room, the corners of showers, where windows meet tiles, and non tiled floors meet tiles are properly finished.
When the surface is properly prepared our work will last for years, and we know the best preparation products. When tiling wooden floors we recommend a Hardie Bacca board (cement board), screwed down every 150mm with stainless steel screws ( so they will not rust).
Properly maintained our work will last years. But if after many years the grouting does turn black, we can re-grout.
Adhesives:
Adhesives used for the 21st century is a gel based. Kerokoll H40 Flexible Tile Adhesive is eco-friendly, as it is formulated with locally-sourced minerals meaning lower green house gas emission during transportation. It also contains recycled minerals thereby reducing the damage to the environment caused by extracting pure raw materials, and is single-component: avoiding the use of plastic can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and the need to dispose of special waste.
how much extra should we have for wastage on tiles?
This is a standard measurement for wastage , if you use a tile with a pattern it can be up to 20% .
what is a stronger adhesive ?
Powder form is a much stronger adhesive which comes in 20 kg bags .For smaller tiles use ready mixed adhesive that comes in buckets . Stronger adhesive is used for larger format tiles .
keep grout the same colour, from when installed in my shower?
dry the ties and grout, lots of air circulation.
